What Happened to Venom in Spider Man 3
Tom Holland's Spider-Man Comments Cast Venom 2's Big Reveal in a New Light
Tom Holland's recent comments have caused a discussion about what this means for Spider-Man. The results could even affect the Venom franchise.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now playing in theaters.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has quickly become one of the most anticipated films of the holiday season. This is partly due to the confirmation that Alfred Molina's Doc Ock will be reprising his role from Spider-Man 2. There are also rumors that Spider-Men from previous films will also be helping Tom Holland face off against a new threat. According to Holland, the third film felt like the end of a franchise and was treated as such. While this could be clever wordplay to mark the end of an era, this conclusion may have been hinted at in the mid-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
In the scene, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom are lying low on a tropical island, so they don't get arrested by the police after defeating Carnage. While laying in bed and watching TV, Venom offers to show Eddie a glimpse of the vast knowledge that the symbiote hive contains. However, as Venom begins to show him, a disruption occurs that changes Eddie's room to a nice resort hotel on another island. The television also shows J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) outing Peter Parker as Spider-Man. The scene signified the eventual meeting between Venom and the wall-crawler.
Before Holland's comments, Let There Be Carnage's mid-credits scene seemed like a massive hint that Venom would finally be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe ahead of No Way Home. But now, with Holland stating that the film feels like the end of the franchise, it may mean that his character, or at least a fraction of his universe, is the one colliding with Venom. Running parallel to the MCU, Sony has been quietly setting up pieces for its own Sony Spider-Man Universe. Some hints have already been shown with Michael Keaton's Vulture appearing in Morbius, but nothing more has been revealed.
Considering Venom is watching the same footage shown in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's easy to assume that the character is inhabiting the same reality as the Avengers, at least for now. But Holland's comments may also allude to the fact that whatever happens at the end of No Way Home could revert Peter to a universe all his own that includes Venom. However, if any of the rumored Peter Parkers appear, it could also mean that Venom will end up in a world with any of the other Spider-Men and form an integrated universe with them.
Sony and Marvel Studios have had a strong relationship when it comes to keeping Spider-Man in the MCU. But there has been at least one moment where that relationship faltered and Peter was not going to be included in any more MCU films before a new deal was worked out. With the multiverse rewriting how these films can operate, thanks to variants and parallel timelines, it's possible that Sony can have their cake and eat it too. Depending on how No Way Home ends, Venom could become the sometimes nemesis to a new Peter Parker or a returning one like Andrew Garfield. Doing so would give Sony its own Spider-Man franchise and allow Holland to stay and mingle in the MCU. With how the multiverse's rules work, this could expand the character's stories greatly and potentially open the door for even more crossovers.
Tom Holland's comments were carefully chosen so as not to reveal any details about No Way Home. However, he also mentions how it would have to be tonally different if they returned for a new trilogy. Therefore, his words may signify how final the film felt, without it being the end of his run as Spider-Man. Nevertheless, with Venom being thrown into the mix, his comments could also indicate that the universe is getting ready to expand in a massive way, meaningLet There Be Carnage's mid-credits scene was just a taste of what's to come.
To see the amazing mid-credits scene, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is playing exclusively in theaters.
